Family mourns death of 13-year-old boy in Queens after gunshot wound to the head:

CAMBRIA HEIGHTS, Queens (WABC) — A 13-year-old boy who was shot in the head in a Dunkin’ Donuts parking lot has died, his family announced Wednesday.

The family of 13-year-old Sanjay Samuel spoke outside Cohen Children’s Hospital on Wednesday, saying the teenager had died.

Eyewitness News spoke with the victim’s mother, who said her whole world fell apart when she learned that her son, affectionately nicknamed “Peanut,” would never return home.

Sanjay’s mother, Willene Griffith, said, “Sanjay was my most joyful son. I am deeply saddened by the loss of my Sanjay.”

The family says they want to donate Samuel’s organs.

This tragic update comes just two days after a shooting. Police say Samuel, a high school freshman, was in the Dunkin’ Donuts parking lot with friends Monday morning when a scooter rider approached and shot him.

Surveillance video shows a boy running into a deli and telling other children what happened. They emerge stunned and distraught. Detectives also recovered surveillance video that suggests the shooting was directed at someone. Surveillance video of the shooting has not yet been released. Police believe the teenager was the intended target.

Although police have not yet arrested anyone, they said they have identified a suspect and are searching for him.
